Freedom of the City of London awarded to our Chair of Council, Lucian Hudson
Civic honour recognises Lucian’s contributions to environmental affairs, civic engagement and cross-sector collaboration

Lucian’s career spans more than 40 years across Government, media, civil society and higher education, currently as Executive Director, Communications & External Relations, Durham University and as Chair of the Tavistock Institute.
He has built a reputation for leading and enabling organisations, communities and policymakers to work through complex challenges.
Lucian’s achievements cover major global, national and regional issues, including environmental policy and society’s response to Foot and Mouth Disease and other risks to the public.
Lucian has made substantial and lasting contributions to the Tavistock Institute. As Chair of Council since 2021, and Chair between 2003 and 2007, he has helped to shape its life and its future.
We are proud that he is a Tavistock Institute trained consultant and executive coach, with Tavistock Certificates in Coaching for Leadership: Psychodynamic Approaches; Board Dynamics; and Group Relations Consultancy.
Dr Eliat Aram, CEO of the Tavistock Institute, offered her warmest congratulations to Lucian on the day of his honour. She said: “We have been thinking of Lucian on this proud day of recognition for his contributions and accomplishments.”
Dr Mannie Sher, Vice-Chair and Principal Consultant Researcher at the Tavistock Institute, added: “I have admired the thoughtfulness, humanity and commitment Lucian brings to his leadership of the Institute and this honour is a wonderful recognition of his contributions.”
A historic City of London honour
The Freedom of the City of London dates back to the 13th century.
One traditional route to becoming a Freeman is through membership of a City livery company.
Originally established as medieval trade guilds, livery companies continue to support education, charitable causes and professional standards.
Lucian received the Freedom through his membership of the Worshipful Company of Farriers.
The Farriers’ Company is one of the City’s historic livery companies.
Founded more than 650 years ago, it promotes the welfare of the horse and supports the farriery profession. The company also helps preserve the traditions of the City of London while advancing education and charitable work.
