Leadership in contemporary organisations demands more than expertise. It requires the capacity to hold authority, read the system, and make strategic choices under pressure, while remaining close to the work and the people you serve.

In complex environments, leaders are often immersed in operational demands. Perspective narrows. Decisions become reactive. Strategic thinking is squeezed by urgency.

This retreat offers a rigorous and reflective space to step back from immersion, explore your leadership, and strengthen your capacity to lead strategically across your system.

Curious? find out more

Living and leading in strategic complexity means:

  • Living authority in role with the judgement, perspective and clarity it requires
  • Leading by creating the conditions for others to think and act strategically.

Leading in this way becomes a navigational activity: the capacity to move between the “dance floor” of immediate demands and the “balcony” of wider perspective; to interpret what is happening in the system; to clarify primary task; and to make choices that align purpose, people and practice.

A Tavistock approach

This retreat draws on the Tavistock approach, with its focus on group dynamics, leadership, authority and organisational behaviour. Read more here.

Who is this retreat for?

This retreat is for leaders who:

  • Seek to strengthen strategic capacity in others and across their organisation
  • Hold dual identities as professional leaders with organisational responsibility
  • Are navigating transitions, increased scope, or strategic complexity
  • Remain close to the work while carrying system-wide accountability

Participants may come from health and social care, education, government, NGOs or mission-driven organisations.

Participants will Explore:

Leadership in role: clarifying authority, boundaries and primary task

Strengthening capacity to shift between strategic perspectives and operational reality

How mental models influence strategic choices

Integrating strategy with lived experience

Navigating uncertainty, trade-offs and politics in the workplace

Aligning your leadership ambition and contribution with system needs

Developing strategic leadership in others, and building practices, teams and structures that enable strategic capability

Co-creation and collaboration as organisational design

The retreat will include creative experiential activities, small and large group dialogue, and space for individual and shared reflection.

What you will leave with

Rather than prescribing fixed outcomes, the retreat invites serious engagement with the complexity of your leadership context. It supports you in identifying the actions and accountability required in your system.

You can expect to leave with:

  • Greater clarity about your leadership and strategic direction
  • Increased capacity to work thoughtfully with systemic pressures
  • A renewed articulation of living and leading in strategic complexity

  • A strengthened peer network of leaders engaged in similar work
