All you need to know to plan your trip to join a Tavistock Institute Professional Development programme
Tavistock Institute programmes are held at the offices of The Tavistock Institute of Human Relations:
50 Featherstone Street,
London EC1Y 8RT
Featherstone Street is situated in Old Street, the gateway to London’s creative and tech hubs, surrounded by vibrant street art, independent galleries, vintage markets and plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants!
Located right on the edge of Shoreditch, Hoxton and the City, it offers a perfect mix of East End history and modern culture, and it’s a good place to use your lunch break to roam and discover London.
Our office is fully accessible – if you think you may need any extra assistance please speak to the Professional Development team who would be glad to help.
Arrival and registration
Programmes take place in the Institute offices in Unit I on the second floor of the building. When you arrive at 50 Featherstone Street, ring the buzzer for the Tavistock Institute and either someone in the office or our friendly concierge will let you into the building.
Make your way up to the second floor, either using the lift or the stairs. If using the lift, turn left out of the doors and walk round the corner. The stairs bring you right to our office door.
The building opens at 8am and we encourage you not to come to the office before this time, as we cannot guarantee someone will be here to greet you.
Basecamp, our online forum
This is a virtual online forum with a private space for your cohort where you can share messages, articles and links to resources; attach documents (and collaborate on them); and continue discussions between programme sessions.
You will be invited to join Basecamp before the programme begins so that you can familiarise yourself with it and provide a profile of yourself – it is very user-friendly.
Breaks and lunch
Refreshments and snacks will be provided at breaks. Our kitchen is fully stocked with teas and a coffee machine.
For lunch, the immediate surrounds benefit from a variety of restaurants and coffee shops, including a Pret a Manger, Marks & Spencer Food, Co-op and Aldi supermarket all within a 2-minute walk from the office. There is a popular street food market on Whitecross Street which runs every day with a large selection of different options including vegetarian/vegan - this is a 5-minute walk from the office.

If you wish to bring your own lunch, you are welcome to use the fridge/microwave facilities.
Any dietary requirements, please let the Professional Development team know and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
Internet
There is wireless internet access throughout the office – please bring your laptop should you wish to access it. All internet access is free to guests – you can get Wi-Fi details from the programme administrator. This service is intended for e-mail and basic internet access.
It is your responsibility to ensure that your computer has current anti-virus software. Our main meeting room has video conference facilities.
Smoking
As with all indoor UK venues, the Featherstone Street building and Tavistock Institute office is a non-smoking area.

Travelling to the UK
Our office is within easy travelling distance of all major London airports.
- London City Airport: 45 min on public transport
- London Heathrow Airport: 1 hour on public transport
- London Gatwick Airport: 1 hour on public transport
- London Stansted Airport: 1 hour on public transport
- London Luton Airport: 1 hour, 20 min on public transport
Journey times via car will be longer, due to traffic.
Car parking
Travelling by car is not recommended. There is an NCP car park at London Barbican and London Finsbury Square. Both are a 10-minute walk from the office - however, rates are expensive and you will also need to pay the Central London Congestion Charge on each day you travel.
Cycling
Transport for London provides bike hire (both classic and e-bike) around London. There are two bicycle docking stations within a minute’s walk of the office. You can find out more on the TFL bike hire website.
Lime Bike offers a bicycle and e-scooter hiring scheme in London, with docking stations at most major train stations. You can find out more on the Lime website.
If you wish to cycle to the office using your own bike, we are able to securely store bicycles in the basement bike store. Please let us know if you plan to do this so we can arrange access to the gate at the back of the building and show you where to store your bike.

Old Street (Northern line and First Capital Connect trains to North London) 3-minute walk;
Barbican (Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City and Circle Line) 11-minute walk;
Moorgate (Northern line) 12-minute walk;
Liverpool Street (Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City, Circle Lines, Elizabeth Line and Greater Anglia trains to Cambridge, Essex and Hertfordshire) 15-minute walk;
Farringdon (Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City, Circle Lines, Elizabeth Line and Thameslink trains to Bedford, Cambridge, Luton and Brighton) 20-minute walk.

Taxi
You can flag down black cabs easily on City Road or Old Street or order an Uber/Bolt to pick you up outside the office.
