What is the ‘Tavistock family’ of organisations?

The Tavistock Institute of Human Relations shares common roots with a group of sister organisations. We share the Tavistock banner and the early Tavistock intellectual heritage with them, but each operates entirely separately from us with their own staffing, governance and finances.

• The Tavistock Clinic was founded by the Tavistock Group of medical practitioners that worked with soldiers and families after the first World War. The Clinic eventually joined the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust and now provides clinical mental health services as part of the North London NHS Foundation Trust. 
• Tavistock Education & Training and Tavistock Consultancy both emerged more recently as part of the work of the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. Both now operate within the auspices of the North London NHS Foundation Trust.
• Tavistock Relationships grew out of the post-war Tavistock Clinic community, starting life as the Family Discussion Bureau in 1948 and becoming the independent organisation it is today.

What does the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations do?

Here at the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, we continue to carry forward and develop Tavistock thinking and practice, through research and evaluation, organisational consultancy, group relations and professional development.
